Embracing the Spirit of Forgiveness This Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr is a time of joy, family, and celebration as Muslims around the world commemorate the end of Ramadan. Celebrated with prayers, feasting, and gift-giving, it’s also an important opportunity to practice forgiveness. While it may not come easily for most of us, learning how to forgive and let go of resentment through compassion can be personally rewarding.
During Eid al-Fitr this year, take some time to reflect on ways in which we can enrich our own lives by learning the art of forgiveness.
1. Understand why you need to forgive
It is important to understand why forgiveness is essential for your spiritual and emotional wellbeing.
Forgiveness does not mean condoning the wrongs committed against you or forgetting any wrongdoing that ended
up hurting you. It means letting go of the pain, anger, and resentment that may be preventing you from
living a fulfilling life.
2. Take time to acknowledge your feelings
Forgiving can be difficult. It is important to take your time to recognize and acknowledge your feelings of
hurt and anger. Sit with your feelings and healthily expressing them: writing in a journal, talking to
someone you trust, or engaging in a creative activity can be helpful.
3. Talk to the person and seek closure
If you are able, try talking to the person who has hurt you. This will allow you to express your feelings
while also learning more about the other party's point of view. It is also important to remember that it is
not your responsibility to repair the relationship, but rather to forgive and move on.
4. Make a conscious decision to forgive
Once you have processed your feelings, it is important to make a conscious decision to forgive. This can be
done through prayer or meditation, or simply by speaking out loud and saying “I forgive _____.”
5. Take care of yourself and self-soothe
Finally, it is important to practice self-care and self-love. This means doing things that make you feel
good and that nourish your soul. This can include spending time in nature, engaging in creative activities,
and surrounding yourself with people who love and support you.
Take this time to learn the art of forgiveness, either by finding inner peace or acknowledging differences and setting aside grievances with those close to you. Reconciliation is a powerful step towards creating new opportunities as we look ahead in life.
