Learning To Go Easy On Ourselves and Its Benefits
In our society, we are constantly told that in order to be successful, we need to push ourselves to the brink of burnout. Everybody these days seems to be trying their hardest to better themselves, from attending coaching classes to upskilling workshops and more. While having such high expectations of oneself is admirable and inspiring, the inability to meet those expectations can cause a great deal of anxiety and guilt.
In this article, we'll talk about why it's good to learn to be gentle with yourself and the benefits you can reap from doing so. So if you’re feeling overwhelmed or feel like you can’t seem to catch a breather, keep reading! We promise that these pointers will be worth your time.
1. Practice self-compassion
To understand what it means to be self-compassionate, consider what it means to treat another person with
compassion, and then apply that same attitude to yourself. If we can find it in ourselves to forgive people
who have hurt us, why not extend the same generosity to ourselves? Learn to quit being so hard on yourself
and recognize that we are all flawed beings who are prone to mistakes, so we can go easy and treat ourselves
kindly when we fail. Recognize that we do not have to conform to a particular image or be a particular way
to be worthy of love. Try putting a sticky note near your desk or in your wallet with affirmation messages
to uplift your spirit when you’re feeling down.
2. Encourage a growth mindset
In this case, embrace challenges rather than avoid them, and learn not to give up when everything appears to
be against you. Envy is one of the main reasons we are so hard on ourselves. Instead of unfavorably
comparing yourself to others, take heart in their successes and strengths. Don't feel guilty about removing
yourself from social media accounts that serve as a constant source of comparison. Make a list of mindful
goals you want to achieve, such as getting enough rest; eating healthy and nutritious food; following
inspiring and motivational social media accounts that actually serve you well; and scheduling time to
meditate. Goals do not have to be ambitious in order to be relevant. By making personal development goals
that you can reach, you can push yourself to improve in every way, both mentally and physically.
3. Express gratitude
There is much to be grateful for in the world, but the pressure to constantly meet our wants and needs can
cause us to overlook the small things that are available to us. We take for granted the roof over our heads,
the hot meals we get to enjoy, and the family and friends who have always been our support system. Gratitude
is a very powerful emotion. Instead of wishing for what we don't have, there's power in appreciating what we
do have right now. Maintaining a gratitude notebook and taking gratitude walks can help. Only by learning to
count our blessings, we calm the critical voice inside our heads and redirect our attention away from our
flaws and toward the wonders of the world around us.
We hope that this article has shown you the importance of learning to be gentle with yourself. It's all too easy to get caught up in trying to better ourselves, putting our needs last, and meeting all of the external expectations, but it's critical that we also take time for self-care.
