Simple Breathing Exercises To Use Anytime, Anywhere
We've all been there—overwhelmed by the demands of work, family, and social obligations. But what if you could find a little peace amid all the chaos?
We are often so busy and bogged down with life's routines that we don't take the time to stop, breathe, and just be. But what if there was a simple breathing practice you could do everyday to help you find inner peace? This week, we’re going to share an easy breathwork exercise that can help center and ground you. So if you're feeling frazzled, stressed out, or just need some quality 'you' time, this one's for you!
1. To restore balance and a feeling of calm
Alternate-nostril breathing is one of the most relied-on breathing techniques that involves blocking off one
nostril at a time as you breathe through the other, alternating between nostrils in a regular pattern. It’s
recommended that you practice this in a seated position as you might feel lightheaded during the breathwork.
- Begin by exhaling completely.
- Close your left nostril with your ring finger and fold down your middle and index fingers, leaving your thumb extended.
- Close your eyes or gaze slowly downwards.
- Inhale through your right nostril.
- Then switch and cover your right nostril with your thumb as you exhale through your left nostril.
- Repeat by breathing in through the left and exhaling out through the right.
- Work up to 10 rounds and notice the difference in your senses.
2. For instant stress relief
You don’t have to be a seasoned yogi to benefit from lion’s breath work. This breathwork is great for
relaxing your throat, jaw, and face. Some people believe that regular practice may help to boost one’s
immunity and even bolster your respiratory function! Here’s how you can get started:
- Find a comfortable seating position.
- Straighten your arms and place your hands on your knees.
- Spread your fingers as wide as you can.
- Open your mouth wide and stick your tongue out toward your chin.
- Take a deep breath in through your nose.
- Exhale through your mouth to make a “ha” sound.
- Return to starting position. Repeat 5–7 times.
3. For an energy boost
When you’re feeling sluggish and low, this energizing breathwork is what you’ll need. You can practice it at
the start of your day or in the middle of a busy work day. Try the following to boost your mood and detoxify
your system after just one session.
- Find a comfortable seated position or you can opt to lie down if you wish to.
- Place two hands on your lower belly and exhale completely, while focusing on the ups and down movement on the belly.
- Start with an inhale, then take a powerful and forceful breath out, drawing the navel in towards your spine.
- Allow the inhale to fill your lungs and belly.
- Start slow and find a comfortable rhythm.
- Repeat for two to three times until you feel bouts of energy washing over you.
- Conclude the session with a round of cleansing breath.
