local information

Long a favored getaway from frenetic Jakarta, the Puncak highlands is becoming an international tourist destination. Located in the valleys between the Gede and Pangrango mountains, the refreshing tropical-highland climate of the Puncak is ideal for nature and eco-tourism attractions, including functioning tea plantations, a Safari park, botanical gardens, and tours of organic vegetable gardens and fruit orchards. The Puncak, which means “peak” in Indonesian, lies between the cities of Bogor and Bandung, a two-hour drive from Jakarta at an altitude of 1000 to 1500 meters. The area was a highland retreat during colonial times, and is noted for many Swiss-style chalets nestled amid the tea plantations and thick natural forests. Puncak is also famous for the presidential palace that is still used by the President and Vice President for ceremonial meetings and for a weekend vacation venue for their families.
