Discover Selingkung, a monumental art installation at Novus Jiva Anyer
There is something beautiful about the way a single knot comes together.
On its own, it may seem small and insignificant. But when hundreds of knots are patiently tied together, they become something far greater than the sum of their parts—a powerful reminder that meaningful change often begins with the smallest actions.
This belief lies at the heart of Selingkung, a monumental public art installation presented by Novus Jiva Anyer in collaboration with Indonesian contemporary artist Agnes Hansella and disability empowerment foundation Precious One.
Running from 21 May to 31 July 2026, Selingkung transforms reclaimed batik scraps into an immersive spatial installation that celebrates sustainability, craftsmanship, and the strength of community. More than an exhibition, it is an invitation to pause, reflect, and become part of a story that continues to grow knot by knot.
As part of Novus Jiva's campaign, The Way Forward, Knot by Knot, Selingkung explores the idea that progress is rarely achieved through one grand gesture. Instead, it is built through countless acts of care, patience, and collaboration.
The installation takes inspiration from the ancient "lucky knot," a timeless symbol found across cultures representing prosperity, unity, and continuity. Each knot within the artwork has been individually handcrafted from reclaimed batik textiles, materials that once served another purpose and are now given new life through artistic expression.
Together, these individual knots form a monumental installation—demonstrating how discarded materials, when viewed differently, can become something meaningful once again.
A Collaboration Rooted in PurposeKnown for her exploration of macramé, materiality, and spatial storytelling, Agnes Hansella pushes her artistic practice into new territory through Selingkung. This marks the first time she incorporates reclaimed batik textiles into her work, bringing together Indonesian heritage, sustainability, and contemporary installation art.
The project was brought to life alongside artisans from Precious One, a disability empowerment foundation established in 2004 by Ratnawati Sutedjo. For more than two decades, Precious One has created opportunities through vocational training, education, craft production, and employment, believing that people with disabilities deserve opportunities—not sympathy.
Every knot within Selingkung carries not only artistic intention but also the dedication, skill, and stories of the people who created it.
More Than an ExhibitionUnlike traditional art installations, Selingkung invites visitors to participate in its journey.
Guests can create their own knot and contribute it to the evolving installation, becoming part of the artwork itself. Visitors may also take home a handmade knot as a keepsake—a small reminder that even the simplest gesture can leave a lasting impact.
At the end of the exhibition, the installation will be carefully dismantled, with its knots shared among visitors so that its story can continue beyond the walls of Novus Jiva.
Throughout the exhibition, guests are also encouraged to support Precious One through donations or by purchasing handcrafted products made by the foundation's artisans, helping sustain its ongoing work in disability empowerment and community development.
