5 Easy Steps to Start Journaling for Self-Reflection
Did you know that writing benefits your health? This simple activity has been proven effective in combating stress and providing relief to people who appear to have nowhere else to vent their emotions.
A study by the American Psychological Association (APA) has shown that expressive writing, such as journaling or keeping a diary, can help reduce negative thoughts and improve memory. As a result, people who consistently write for self-reflection and contemplation are more likely to have the ability to curb anxiety and feel more peaceful when going about their lives.
But for those who don’t write often, we understand that it may be challenging to get started on journaling – and even harder to stick with it! If you don’t know where to begin, keep reading so we can guide you through.
Basically, there’s no rule on how to write a journal. You can do it in any way you want! But to make it easier, we’ve come up with five journal prompts to help you explore your inner self and clear your mind.
1. Acknowledge your feelings
Self-acceptance is a crucial step when doing personal reflection. Instead of denying or holding back your
emotions, take time to reflect on your thoughts and feelings. Asking yourself questions, such as “What am I
feeling right now?” or “What have I done today?” may help you kickstart your writing toward self-discovery.
Remember, your journal is a place where you can allow yourself to let loose.
2. Write about your day
If you want to make journaling a habit, consider writing about your daily activities. Simply jot down what
you remember happening that day. It can be as simple as hearing a funny dialogue when commuting, enjoying
your favorite street food, or describing significant events and experiences. Over time, you’ll look back at
your writing and learn to appreciate every moment (big or small) that enriched your life.
3. Reflect on what brings you joy
When was the last time you spent your day in nature? If you enjoy spending time in the outdoors, we
recommend immersing yourself in some lush greenery and journaling there too! Focusing on a positive
experience, such as writing about a relaxing outdoor vacation, is great to improve your mood and overall
mental wellness. If you have recently stayed at Novus Jiva Anyer Hotel, we are sure that the sights, sounds,
and sensations of our beach resort will bring back wonderful memories.
4. Write down your goals
Oftentimes, our busy and chaotic lives force us to put aside our dreams and goals. Without the things that
keep us going, we can easily become stressed, unhappy, and burned out in the long run. Journaling is
important because it allows you to recall forgotten short or long-term plans during your self-reflection,
with the hopes that you will be more encouraged to accomplish them.
5. Express your gratitude
Believe it or not, counting your blessings can actually reduce frustration and increase happiness, as one
study shows. Try incorporating gratitude into your journal once a week by giving details about precious
things or supportive people around you. Writing a gratitude journal at night, especially before bed, will
also help you gain better sleep quality.
Journaling can be a therapeutic and meditative journey for people who are willing to get started and dedicate themselves to it. We hope that these five journal prompts will shed some light on your quest to achieve personal growth and well-being.
